At the Top of Our Lungs

So what IS the message of this show…
At the Top of Our Lungs aims to create a crack in the infrastructure of female stereotypes and standards. It is about many aspects of being female, good & bad, and that nothing is simply black and white. Through these pieces we will playfully expose female objectification, address issues women face every day, and push a boundary… or two.
Stereotypes are powerful and omnipresent. They perpetuate positive or negative meanings and are rarely accurate; nevertheless, it is through that subjective response be it by race, gender, body type, hairstyle – that stamps a first impression. Stereotypes stand in the way despite our intention to be objective. Although we may acknowledge the consequences of such sweeping generalizations, the practice continues.
Tonight’s show challenges you to examine the core of our humanity. Once labels, stereotypes, “Us vs. Them” mentalities are stripped away, there are no boundaries or borderlines. The possibilities are infinite. The cost, priceless. We know that when we empower women, helping them develop their voices and confidence, everyone benefits—girls, men, boys, families, and communities.

I was on the committee last year and it was a ton of fun (and a huge success). I’d like to take this moment to tell you about it. On October 19th, 2010 viBe Theater Experience held its third annual fund-raising event, viBenefit 2010.
viBenefit 2010 attracted nearly 150 guests to NYC’s hot-spot Juliet Supper Club. Guests enjoyed specialty cocktails by Bacardi Rum, Tequila Cazadores, 42 Below Vodka, wine furnished by New Age Imports and gourmet hors d’oeuvres by Jumeirah Essex House.

We were asked to donate 10% of all net profits to V-Day 2011 Spotlight on Women of Haiti. After that, we have set a goal of 94 cents of every dollar raised to be donated to viBe Theater Experience. Help us raise awareness. The truth is shocking. According to the United Nations, ONE out of every THREE women on the planet will be physically or sexually abused in her lifetime.
